Large SUVs like the Expedition and Tahoe are vehicles that undeniably say "let's go on an adventure!"

Performance, Efficiency, and Tow Ratings

The Ford Expedition is powered by a 3.5-liter EcoBoost® engine. This 380-horsepower twin-turbocharged V6 engine is paired with a standard 10-speed automatic transmission. With the exception of the Timberline® model, all Expeditions are rear-wheel drive (RWD).

The off-road-focused Ford Expedition Timberline® comes standard with Ford's Intelligent four-wheel drive (4WD) with Terrain Management System™ (an available option on all other trims). The system features seven unique drive modes to tackle any terrain and road conditions. Under the hood, the Timberline® gets a 3.5-liter High-Output EcoBoost® engine which puts out 440 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque.

Like the Expedition, the Chevy Tahoe has a 10-speed automatic transmission and is RWD with optional 4WD. The Z71 is the Tahoe's comparable model that features standard 4WD. The Tahoe also features a first-of-its-kind Four-Corner Air Ride Adaptive Suspension. The adaptive suspension offers automatic and selectable height adjustments that improve ground clearance and aerodynamic performance and allows you to lower the vehicle for easier entry and exit.

The Chevy Tahoe offers three engine choices:
  • 5.3L V8 engine with 355 horsepower
  • 6.2L V8 engine with 420 horsepower (standard on High Country trim)
  • 3.0L Duramax® Turbo-Diesel engine with 277 horsepower

The more refined powertrain of the Expedition boosts its fuel efficiency to near the top of the class. EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings for the Ford Expedition are 17 / 23 mpg* city / highway. The Tahoe falls into the range you'd likely expect from a full-size three-row behemoth. Expect around 14 / 20 mpg* city / highway with the Tahoe.

When it comes to towing capabilities, the Ford Expedition beats out the Tahoe quite impressively. The maximum towing capacity of the Ford Expedition is 9,300 pounds, while the Tahoe only tows up to 7,900 pounds.**
